After months of campaigning, Coast is delighted to hear that the government is updating legislation to improve the rights of park home owners.
From Monday 27th May, park home site operators will no longer be involved in the process of buying or selling a park home and could face prosecution if they continue to interfere in these processes.
The new laws have been created to clamp down on rogue site operators who manipulate regulations to drive out residents or generate profits for themselves when people move to or away from the site.
Among the common problems park home owners have faced on certain sites are operators failing to approve potential buyers and forcing owners to sell the park home to them at a reduced rate, which they then re-sell at a profit once the previous occupiers have moved away. There have also been issues with certain sites not maintaining their communal facilities adequately.
Although these sites are in the minority, those that have been affected by operator pressure are now in a legally strengthened position, which will help to stamp out such behaviour going forward.
“It only takes a few dishonest site owners to blight the industry by preying on vulnerable residents and neglecting their duty of care,” Eric Pickles, Conservative MP for Brentwood and Ongar – who has campaigned tirelessly for these legislation changes – remarked to the BBC website.
Those selling their park home will be offered greater support through a new telephone advice line, which will be operated by the Leasehold Advisory Service. Further details on this will be revealed shortly.
